UL Certified Labeling Systems





UL certified labeling systems are used for a variety of applications. These systems can be used for bottle labeling, carton and pallet labeling, or can labels. There are several types of labeling systems available, including front and back labelers, bottom and top labelers, and automatic labeling systems. These systems are able to print text, graphics, barcodes, and more.


The NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) has set a standard for acceptable labeling of hazardous chemicals. These labels should be readable at a distance. The table below shows the minimum height of lettering required for various distances. UL 969 has specific requirements for the surface substrate and printing processes. They are based on the end use, the exposure, and the type of label.


UL 969 covers pressure sensitive adhesive labels, laminates, and pictographs. These materials are tested and evaluated by UL inspectors to ensure that they are safe and durable. The standards are also applied to unprinted label materials. UL 969 does not cover flag tags or wrap-around labels.


UL has been testing labels and related products for more than 40 years. Labels are tested and inspected for durability, compliance with UL 969, and conformity to a variety of conditions. During this process, an inspector sends the label constructions to a lab for testing. If the constructions meet a number of conditions, they are certified. When a label is certified, it is noted in the device master record.


UL also certify label constructions to a wide range of temperatures. This includes occasional gasoline splashes and different application surfaces. The Labeling Design have an approved ink system. These ink systems include thermal transfer ribbon, laser toner, and hot stamping foil. Having an approved ink system will help the label remain legible for a long period of time.


Another UL certification level is PGDQ2 which applies to caution and danger labels. This standard has a less strict performance requirement than the UL 969 Marking and Labeling Systems. The label is evaluated by determining the unique label requirements for a particular UL-certified product. PGIS2 is most often used for placards, power supply cords, and electrical equipment enclosures.


UL is a global leader in safety science. The Labeling Systems have been tested and certified the products of more than 70 companies. They have launched new services to certify products to the ANSI/CAN/UL 969A standard. These services allow for the flexibility of the quality assurance program. A UL-certified label is also approved for permanent product identification.


UL certification is required for most pressure sensitive labeling applications. Labels for products that are UL-certified are pre-qualified and tested for durability and compliance with UL 969. They are sent to a lab for testing annually. If a label is not certified, it may be accepted for sale, but it is not guaranteed to be suitable for the intended end use.
